The Challenge
Lörrach sits directly on the Swiss border, minutes from Basel, and its center competes for visitors who can just as easily shop in another country. The city's business development agency WFL wanted evidence, not anecdotes: what do events, holidays, and seasons actually do to footfall?
The Solution
From early 2023 to the project's planned completion in 2025, eight Ariadne measuring points covered the Lörrach Innenstadt. The dashboard delivered year-over-year comparisons, dwell times, and the couplings between zones that show how visitors move through the center.
The Impact
The open-Sunday Herbstfest in October 2023 drew around 35% more visitors than an average October Saturday, with the Karstadt junction alone taking roughly 23% of all measured traffic. During the Gugge-Explosion carnival, about 43% of visitors stayed longer than 30 minutes in the center. The city used the peak-time data to plan security staffing, parking, and public transport around its events.
